Meryl (Justine Clarke), an artist, just back from her father's funeral. She sees possibilities of fatal accidents occured in her own imagination: bombing, earthquake, train crashes, sharks...each scene displayed in animation, each lasting for only a few seconds...but each imaginary accident shocking enough. Meryl witnesses the death of a man(possibly suicide) on a railway line, where she first meets Nick.
Nick (William McInnes), a newspaper photographer, recently diagnosed with a testicular cancer. Nick takes a photo of the man's wife, Julia, which is displayed in the newspaper frontpage. After the diagnosis, Nick thinks of his dead father from time to time, he recollected the last days of the old man, his agony and last words of wisdom and peace. "I'm liking the idea of afterlife."
These are the two main characters. Death hovers over them all the time. Even when making love...Meryl imagines getting infected with aids and dying with pregnancy, while Nick having images of disease, virus, distorted cells, biological reactions on his mind.
Besides the two lovers, there're a few impressive storylines of supporting characters: the grieving woman who lost her husband in the accident; the guilty train driver who blames himself for running over the man; the newspaper editor who barely remembers his own daughter's birthday, but he tries to make things up; the divorced man Andy who has to face his girlfriend's unexpected pregnancy...
This is the kind of movie in which disparate people are connected by some common thing, and its discussion of death, life and relationship are rather tender and in peace. Life is always full of all kinds of possibilities, uncertainties and frustrations, as the title goesm "look both ways", coz you'll never know what's ahead.
Such a movie brings you more experience than you may ever get, which is osurely one unique absorbing feature of movie.
I love the animations of their imagination, and also the stunning flash backs going over in Nick and Meryl's mind. The OST would be great, I wonder where can I download it -,-
