"Underground" a 320 minute mini- series version cut and edited by Director Emir Kusturica screened at BJ French Culture Center （北京法国文化中心） yesterday. It was my first time watching a Kusturica's film. It totally dazed and exhausted me.
The film takes us from wacky farce to deep grief to lyrical fantasy to astoundind horror. A guy kept his best friends, family and fellows countrymen deceived in a hidden underground place making them beleive that WW2 war was still happening, for 20 years turning them into free labors making weapons/arms to serve his own interests. It covers the history of Yugoslavia from 1945 to 1995. When the underground people were being released they still thought they were about to continue fighting the Germans, but instead they just started the civil war and later on, there wasn't a country to call their own. A sad story being presented by absurdist dark humor. Solude to Kusturica!
