Common principle: all these worlds in Wes Anderson’s films are created with the sole purpose of housing morally dignified citizens into polite society. Wes Anderson focuses on the beauty and order and yet lets you glance at the seedy underbelly of filth, chaos and mayhem. In another words, the abyss that beautiful sittings hide.
His characters are refined and with intricately ordered words. Andhumor arises when they try and sometimes fail to remain poised in the face of disorder.
Firstly, disruption of character.
Secondly, rudeness at odds with sittings.
Thirdly, language politeness at odds with settings(窝觉得第三条跟第二条是一样的)
And finally, exercise control and fail.
Civility is all about expectations. Where and why dialogues happen sets the those expectations.
Let’s take this conversation as an example. Chas is Royal’s son and a brilliant business man himself. He shouldn’t swear at his father in front of his sons that he cares so much. Yet he did it the dinner table.

Let’s take another conversation as an example.
Chas’s behavior seems unacceptable at first. His father told them that he is dying while Chas’s yawn suggests his cursoriness and indifference about that.

But it feels justified by the end of this scene. Notice Royal’s world “swing by”that choice of word makes him the bigger jerk in this family than his son which implies the casualness about something. People swing by a bookshop or a bakery but they should “congregate”by a grave.

Coarseness isn’t just caused by the choice of words also could be the tone. Here Royal used “have to”which means he will “swing by”Chas’s wife’s grave out of manners and obligations, but not his own willingness.
And when they finally failed to remain their dignity, even the most composed chaps will eventually reach their breaking point.

Anger brings the worst out of us. When plan fails, society crumbles, we gradually descend into barbarism.
The Tenenbaums characters live in a world of pain, trying to make it another day throughout this inhospitable albeit candy-colored world. Their rudeness is an expression of fear. But more than that, it’s a thin veneer that keeps suffering at bay.
But order, manner, civility and decorum still hold a great part in Wes Anderson’s films. Are they another mask used to distance oneself from one’s true feeling?
