History and Memory reveals two main facts: first, it gives me a general idea about the Japanese American history during post-World war era. Second, it shows me how important the identity for 2nd, 3rd(or maybe more) generation immigration.
“History and Memory is part of a growing body of cultural productions about Japanese internment by third-generation artists born after World War Two.”—Feeling Photography. Before I watched this documentary, I was not aware of the War Relocation and thousand Japanese residents being transfered from the Pacific Coast. There is a voice over in the film “this is a camp? This is a fxxk-damn-it jail!” which is a really powerful indictment.

“Begin searching because I feel lost and grounded, some like a ghost flowing in the dreams missing their lives and yet not having it’s own” it sounds like losing her own identity. She doesn't know either her history or her ancestry’s history, so she feels lost and eager to find out about herself and what being forgotten and lost in her generation. “In Parker, the memory of relocation is the memory that everyone wants to forget. But as soon as they see an Asian face, they remember” For me, the most important thing is how you define yourself and knowing what your identity is. The person who lost his/her own culture and forgot his/her own background is not a citizen of anywhere.

In addition, I really like the structure of the movie. Throughout the movie, there is a same scene repeating, a woman filling a canteen. It is a clue for both audience and for Rea Tajiri to find out the truth and connection between memory and history. And these images bring the story, memory and history together. “This second description is accompanied by a brief flash of a visual image, a dark-haired woman filling a canteen. These two sequences, detailed descriptions of events for which there are no images, attempt to replace the images that have ‘‘happened in the world while there were cameras watching,’’ or that ‘‘we restage in front of cameras, to have images of.’’ –The Skin of the Film
In the Feeling Photography, the author also makes the compliment about the same scene“I would like to reflect for a moment on Tajiri’s extended voice-over, a meditation on the ways in which story and picture, as well as history and memory, must finally connect and come together such that Tajiri can “make this image” and forgive her mother her “loss of memory.” ”

History and Memory is a movie that has both art value and history value. The analysis of “the camp” history and the question about Japanese American identity are really powerful. In the end of the movie, Rea Tajiri goes to another city near the camp, she says, “In Parker, the memory of relocation is the memory that everyone wants to forget. But as soon as they see an Asian face, they remember.” It is really important to remember our past, our background, and where we come from. And remember not mean to hate, but mean to remind people don't repeat the past.
