Plot Summary:Seikichi makes his living fishing from a small boat off the coast of Okinawa. He and his 12-year-old grandson Akira live in a small, tree-lined village in the northern part of the island. On the cliff that skirts the shore sits an open-air burial ground containing the skull of a kamikaze pilot who was shot down during the last days of World War II. When the wind blows through the bullet hole in the skull, it produces a whistling sound which causes the locals to cringe and shudder. They call it the "Crying Head".
沖縄戦で亡くなった愛する人の最期を調べるために、本土から毎夏、沖縄にやってくる初老の女性と、沖縄戦で亡くなった兵士の頭蓋骨を大切に祀（まつ）っている地域の大人や、島で暮らす子どもたちの様子をからめながら、戦争は人々に何を残したのか……を描いた作品です。原作は、沖縄出身の芥川賞作家の目取間俊氏、監督は、「橋のない川」や「絵の中のぼくの村」「わたしのグランパ」など、日本人の心を詩情豊かに描く東陽一氏です。目取間氏は、脚本も手がけています。
