He’s honest, loyal and noble.
He’s Thomas More. Till now, he’s always the moral paragon in Western countries
The king at that time, Henry 8th , showed great respect to More.
Here, we can not but admire the tolerance of the king, for the ideals of More were in collision with the kingship. But, Henry tolerated all of these, and treated More as a good teacher as well as a helpful friend.
When the Cardinal Wolsey was in prison, Henry invited More personally to be his first Minister.However, More was a pious Catholic. The divorce of the King disobeyed the will of the Pope. More could not stand the tiniest bit of contempt for the Pope or the Catholic system.
To our surprise, Henry only asked More to deal with other political affairs and promised that he would not made More involved in his divorce. The trust More won from the King is clearly remarkable.
When the plague raging through the country, many people were killed off and the whole city was in flames. While, More took his family reading books peacefully in front of the fireplace.
He was not afraid of death. He told his daughter he had surrendered his life to the God. The only thing he had to fear were the pamphlets of Martin Luther, the pagan.
So when More was facing the devout priest, Fish, who advertised Martin Luther’s thinking, he could hardly contain his anger.
Actually, both More and Fish are men of true faith. They believed in the same god but had serious split on the ways and means.
When Fish tied on the stake frame and the fire burning, other bishops turned away. For them, he was one of the thousands of executed pagans. But More was different. He peered at Fish until he was swallowed by the flames. Perhaps More had hadn’t the heart to hurt this man of strong conviction, but also because of his faith, he had to do that.
Henry’s temper became worse and worse. In 1535, Sir Thomas More was sentenced to the guillotine by the king because he resolutely opposed the religious reformation held by Henry 8th.
